130 Nominations in 26 Categories
Announced for 2005 Jeff Awards
Chicago, IL, Sept. 12, 2005 - The Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee today unveiled 130 nominations in 26 categories for the 2005 Jeff Awards with a total of 29 theatre companies receiving nominations. Recipients will be announced at the 37th annual awards ceremony November 7 at Drury Lane Theatre Water Tower Place.
A total of 120 Equity productions by 51 Chicago area producing companies were judged during the 2004-05 Equity season, running August 1, 2004 through July 31, 2005, and 82 of these received Jeff Recommendations.
Marriott Theatre outpaced other theatre companies with 22 nominations for three productions. Other companies with numerous nominations are Chicago Shakespeare Theater, 13; Steppenwolf Theatre, 11, and Porchlight Music Theatre Chicago, 10.
Nominations were spread among 51 productions. Marriott’s “Beauty and the Beast� led with 7 nominations, followed by: “Sweeney Todd,� Porchlight Music Theatre Chicago, 6; “Wicked,� Broadway in Chicago-Wicked Chicago, 5; “Kabuki Lady Macbeth,� Chicago Shakespeare Theater, 5, and “Sunset Boulevard,� Marriott Theatre, 5.
Format and location of the Equity Awards ceremony is changing this year. In addition to moving downtown, the reception will follow the ceremony rather than precede it. Doors open at 6 p.m. to light hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and the ceremony begins at 7 p.m. The reception will be held after the awards ceremony at the Mity Nice Grill next door in Water Tower Place. The evening is black tie optional, and the public is invited to attend.
Advance tickets are available for $65 for general admission and $50 for members of Actors’ Equity Association, United Scenic Artists, The Dramatists Guild of America and Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. A reduced parking rate of $7.50 also is available. For ticket orders, checks should be made out to The Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee and mailed to David Liesse, 3531 S. Founded in 1968, the mission of The Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee is to honor excellence in theatrical productions in the Chicago theatre community. The committee, comprised of theatre professionals and experienced theatergoers, evaluates approximately 200 theatrical productions and holds two awards ceremonies annually. Originally chartered to recognize Equity productions, the Citations (non-equity) wing was founded in 1973 to celebrate outstanding achievement in non-union Chicago theatre, and that ceremony is held annually in June.
