Non-Equity houses broke new ground with bold plays and musicals. Nominated productions include new musicals at Lifeline and Bailiwick Theatres, and new plays and adaptations at Prop Thtr and the House Theatre, among others.

Bailiwick Repertory Theatre received the most nominations with 13 for three productions, Kiss of the Spider Woman and A Kiss From Alexander, along with Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches, as co-producer with The Hypocrites. Lifeline Theatre followed with 12 nominations for its productions of Queen Lucia, The Talisman Ring and Johnny Tremain. New Musical Queen Lucia received eight nominations and Kiss of the Spider Woman received seven nominations. The Hypocrites received 11 nominations, including five for Death of a Salesman. Dancing at Lughnasa at Raven Theatre and What's Wrong With Angry? at Circle Theatre received five nominations each.

Real-life husband and wife Bill McGough and Donna McGough both received nominations as Principal Actors for their portrayals of husband and wife Willy and Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman.

The depth and breadth of the nominations reflect the recognition by the Jeff Committee of the boldness and innovations of our storefront theatres and non-Equity houses in the City of Chicago.

Founded in 1968, the mission of The Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee is to honor excellence in theatrical productions in the Chicago theatre community. Originally chartered to recognize Equity productions, the Citations (non-Equity) wing was founded in 1973 to celebrate outstanding achievement in non-union Chicago theatre. The Jeff Committee, composed of theatre professionals and experienced theatergoers, evaluates approximately 250 theatrical productions and holds two awards ceremonies each year. The Citations Awards, honoring outstanding achievement in non-union productions, are presented in early June. The Equity ceremony will be held on Monday, November 6, 2006.
